Am I eligible for Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage?

You are eligible to enroll in a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan if you are entitled to:

  • Medicare Part A and/or enrolled in Part B
  • You live in the service area of a Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan
  • You’re a U.S. citizen or lawfully present in the United States

You may choose a stand-alone Medicare prescription drug plan or prescription drug coverage offered with a Medicare Advantage plan, but you may only be enrolled in one Medicare prescription drug plan at a time. Those who have Medicare prescription drug coverage eligibility must enroll in a plan during a proper enrollment period.

1Your Initial Enrollment Period is the 7-month period that starts 3 months before your 25th month of getting Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board disability benefits and ends 3 months after your 25th month of getting disability benefits. Your coverage will begin the first day of the month after you ask to join a plan. If you join during one of the 3 months before you first get Medicare, your coverage will begin the first day of your 25th month of entitlement to disability payments.
